Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and results-oriented Senior Manager of First and Middle Mile Transportation to lead and oversee our linehaul operations. This role is responsible for managing all aspects of first-mile and middle-mile transportation, ensuring operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and alignment with company objectives. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership skills, expertise in transportation logistics, and a track record of driving performance in a fast-paced environment.

This individual will also play a key role in transportation planning, forecasting, analytics, and data review, ensuring that decisions are supported by actionable insights and align with the company’s long-term goals.

Key Responsibilities:

Operational Leadership:

  • Manage all linehaul operations, including first-mile loads inbound from client sites and middle-mile lanes between company warehouses.
  • Develop and execute strategies to optimize transportation efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Oversee scheduling, routing, and freight consolidation to ensure timely and reliable service.

Planning and Forecasting:

  • Lead transportation capacity planning and volume forecasting to support current and future business needs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align transportation plans with warehouse and delivery operations.
  • Monitor market trends and provide data-driven recommendations for lane expansion, route optimization, and resource allocation.

Data Analytics and Review:

  • Analyze operational and financial data to identify patterns, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Regularly review performance metrics such as safety, quality, cost, and delivery timelines to drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Generate and present detailed reports on transportation performance to stakeholders, ensuring visibility into key trends and challenges.

Carrier Management:

  • Source and negotiate contracts with carriers to ensure service quality and competitive rates.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with carrier partners to support lane expansions and new market launches.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure all linehaul operations comply with federal, state, and local transportation regulations.
  • Stay current with regulatory changes and implement necessary adjustments to processes and procedures.

Performance Management:

  • Monitor and analyze safety, quality, and cost metrics to identify areas for improvement.
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement through data-driven decision-making and innovative solutions.

Project Management:

  • Lead initiatives to expand and launch new lanes, collaborating with cross-functional teams to support company growth.
  • Manage special projects related to process improvements, system implementations, and strategic goals.

Team Development:

  • Build and develop a high-performing team of transportation professionals.
  • Provide mentorship and training to enhance skill sets and promote career growth.

Preferred Software Experience:

  • Familiarity with transportation and logistics software is a strong plus. Experience with the following tools is highly preferred:
  • NetSuite for financial and operational management.
  • Project44 for transportation visibility and logistics coordination.
  • Cargo Chief for freight sourcing and tracking.
  • Farelanes for lane and routing optimization.
  • DAT for load boards and freight matching.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in transportation management, with a focus on first-mile and middle-mile operations.
  • Proven expertise in carrier sourcing, contract negotiations, and regulatory compliance.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience managing teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a data-driven approach to decision-making.
  • Proficiency in transportation management systems (TMS) and other logistics software.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization.

Travel:

This position may require up to 25% of travel time.
